Holiday Happy Hour (Portland and Valley)

ORSLA members and friends,

We’re having a special Holiday Happy Hour on December 18th, 5:30-8:30pm.  Both Portland and Valley locations will also have a book swap/drive – see below for more information.

This event is FREE!  Please RSVP here so we know how much food to order.

***********************

The season for giving is upon us once again!  This year, our holiday party will have a book swap and a book donation drive.  Those who are interested in participating are encouraged to bring one  book for the swap and at least two books for the Jackson Street Youth Shelter (Valley) or Raphael House domestic violence shelter (Portland) (http://raphaelhouse.com/).  Books for either the swap or donation can be from your personal book collection or newly purchased.

The Raphael House serves adults, teenagers, and children so please keep this in mind if you are deciding to donate books.  The donations coordinator said that any genre would be great – romance, historical, travel, graphic novels, etc.

Jackson Street Youth Shelter serves homeless, runaway, and other youth in crisis in Linn and Benton counties. See the book section of their wish list for ideas (http://www.jacksonstreet.org/donate/jackson-street-wish-list).

The presenters will be in Portland with a viewing location in Corvallis. Light snacks will be served at both locations.

Date: November 27th, 2012
Time: 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Locations: Corvallis: Valley Library; Directions (the Valley Library (VLib) is in the middle of the upper right quadrant on the online map. Easiest entrance is on north side of building. Use the Parking link on map webpage to add “parking” layer.  Easiest visitor lot is on the northeast
Portland: Davis, Wright, Tremaine; Suite 2400, 1300 SW Fifth Ave
Cost: SLA Members – $10; Under/not – employed members – $5; Non-members – $15

Featuring the following presentations:

Discovery Interfaces: If all the big kids are doing it, why can’t I?

Presenter: Jonathan Jacobsen, Andornot Consulting

Discovery interfaces are one of the hottest trends in the library Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) sphere. A discovery interface provides a more intuitive and productive experience for users, whether searching a library catalogue, an article index, or any other data source. It sits on top of any existing database or integrated library system, ingesting records in many formats, and providing a web-based search interface for end users.

While many public and academic libraries have implemented pricey systems such as BiblioCommons, AquaBrowser and Summon in recent years, smaller, specialized libraries have not. We believe there is significant value in discovery systems for all libraries and intend for this presentation to elucidate special librarians as to why.

Information Rodeo

Presenters: Sue Mecklem and Meryl Cole

Do you have trouble wrangling just the right resources in fields outside your expertise?  Meryl Cole, Principal at Masterminds Strategic Research, and Sue Mecklem, Research Librarian at Davis Wright Tremaine, will round up relevant, interesting, and practical websites and applications in the areas of law, science, and technology, with a few surprises thrown in.

Usability Basics for the Information Professional

If you have ever been baffled by the ways in which users interact with the web tools and resources that you have worked so hard to create or provide, it may be time to think about usability testing. But don’t panic! Just because you are not a usability expert or do not have a local usability group to call upon does not mean that “use-ability” testing is out of reach. In Don’t Make Me Think, Steven Krug notes that “After all, usability really just means…making sure that something works well: that a person of average (or even below average) ability and experience can use the thing – whether it’s a Web site, a fighter jet, or a revolving door – for its intended purpose without getting hopelessly frustrated.” In this session, we will use case studies to demonstrate why information professionals should consider usability testing. We will share tips and tools used to conduct testing so you can improve your users’ experiences regardless of the context in which you work.

ORSLA Summer Potluck Picnic, August 12

Greetings ORSLA!

The Summer Potluck Picnic day is rapidly approaching!  Are…you…ready?  Join your fellow ORSLA members (and their families!) from up and down the Willamette Valley on Sunday, August 12 at Wilsonville’s Memorial Park from noon-4:00pm. We’ll eat, chat, play and just relax.  Did we mention this is a potluck?   You bring: your family members, your favorite picnic fare, a dish to pass, your plates/utensils and non-alcoholic drinks (alcohol is not allowed outside of reserved shelter areas). ORSLA will provide a grill and charcoal.

The area of the park we will be in has a fountain and playground so kids (big and small) will be thrilled!

Where:  Wilsonville’s Memorial Park, 8100 SW Memorial Drive

Time:  12:00pm – 4:00pm

Directions:  North or South on I-5 to Exit 283. Head east on Wilsonville Road until you reach Memorial Road. The park (http://ci.wilsonville.or.us/Modules/ShowDocument.aspx?documentid=4101) is in the southeast quadrant of the Wilsonville Road/Memorial Road intersection.

Look for us:  1) either in the Murase Shelter or the Grove Shelter (see the park map attached), or 2) a free-standing tent if we can’t get either of those shelters.  Look for the ORSLA banner.
